Happy May Day

The USSR used to celebrate May Day. I don't know about Russia.

It just got finished hailing here. Pea-sized.

I got six pieces of mail: No bills, two mayoral solicitations, Martha Stewart Omnimedia stockholder report (I owe one share), two credit card offers for Mastercard, one solicitation from Ball State Foundation. Here's a piece of advice: Never, under any circumstances, give to your alma maters's foundation. Make a notation to direct your donation to your favorite academic department, to a scholarship fund, to student activities, anything but an unrestricted account like a Foundation. Foundation money can be used for anything: flowers for some dead person, dinners and alcohol to wine and dine big givers . . . anything. Be specific, people. I give mine to the political science department so they can bring in speakers and do other things to corrupt young minds into my way of thinking.

Friday is my youngest sister's birthday. The check is in the mail.

Saturday is Cinco De Mayo. Can you say "margarita"?

She got a lot of mail but no bills 2 were about electing a new mayor and asking her to vote for them, one was telling her how much her one share in martha stewart is worth , 2 credit card offers. Ball state is her old college and the letter from them was asking for money, she's saying don't give money to the college per se, give it to a specific departmant or they will fritter it on wine women and song and not lefty liberal pinko commie brainwashing like she wants them to.
its the 5th of may on saturday can you say cocktail... this translation was brought to you free of charge by anglo american weasle productions North Yorkshire

Emma, I'm going to guess any money you give to your alma mater as a donation goes into the foundation funds anyway (especially at a state school.) Foundations are often the administrating organization for scholarships; they are often the source of money for Continuing and Community Education programs. Oh yeah, it's the foundation that pays for those speakers that political science has come in (or at least in part). In fact, a college's foundation is its fund raising arm for most projects. And yes, they do use some of the money to run on because they are basically non-profit organizations (trust me, if you give money to a department it is just as likely to be spent on flowers to dead folk and "Recruitment" dinners as it is if you give it to the Foundation). Foundations, by the way, are regulated on what they can spend money on and even some types of donations.

Our foundation funds several single parent scholarships, daycare scholarships, nursing scholarships, community ed programs, and helps fund the annual "kids college." If you gave money to my department, it would simply go into the budget and be swooped up by the state.

This is simply not true in the Indiana universities I have known/been affliated with. Donations to individual academic departments may used for: S&E, travel, speakers, etc. Foundation money is like pouring money down a rat hole, so I designate when I give to a college.
Monies donated to something specific have more strings attached to them than money dumped into a Foundation account.

Clanky,
If we ever meet, I shall present you with an authentic "Ball U" t-shirt which, over here, is a naughty double entendre. The shirts are very prized during Spring Breaks in Florida.

kids college and continuting ed are free there rosa? here it costs several hundred dollars to partake in continuing ed and kids on campus classes. however, people in yuppietopia can afford it, so maybe that's why?
jilly

p.s. emma, i don't give money to my college at all, they get a lot of money that they piss away wihtout getting any more from me than the first $15,000 i gave them.

Jilly, since our for credit hour rate is like $75/hour, we're not raking in the big bucks. We're not a rich organization.

Our Comm ed and Cont ed classes are a mixed bag. Some are free, some are low rates (one computer class for seniors was a total of $11), some run about $50 for the class (I think Yoga is like that).

And Emma, I've never been affliated with a college where the strings on the check weren't immediately disregarded--unless it was for a specific scholarship fund. Perhaps Indiana's laws are simply different.
