Snow, Victory Garden, Orchids

I wanted to take LP out to breakfast this morning but if he wants to go, he’ll have to shovel some snow. I woke up to two inches on the ground, and it’s still coming down. It’s very pretty though. I like a fresh snow, but when it gets grimy and dirty and slushy from car exhaust that’s a different matter.

The appraiser guy didn’t call me back, so I don’t know if he’ll show up today or not.

To date I’ve received about 15 garden and seed catalogs. I looked through them last night, dog-earring pages as I went. If I ordered everything I wanted, I’d need a place the size of the Biltmore Estates.

Yesterday at lunch I watched
Victory Garden. I loved when ole bearded, scruffy-looking Roger Swain hosted it. That now have this fey, younger guy who doesn’t know squat! WTF is that all about. He planted a miniature greenhouse full of different ferns and it looked like shit.

Anyway Erica Glasener was a guest correspondent. She used to have a kick ass garden show on HGTV where she’d visit normal people’s gardens and discuss plants with them. I loved that show. On yesterday’s Victory Garden she visited an orchid specialist and they showed the basics about growing orchids. It reminded me of Sparky and it put me off of my egg sandwich so I didn’t even finished lunch. (no offense Sparks)

That’s all

We had to have ours appraised too. I went for the clean and tidy look. We didn't need to show our marriage certificate though.

We didn't even need to show our marriage certificate for our first mortgage.

Emma, what do you think of Paul James on HGTV?

I have a question for the re-financers of the world...

Is it better to re-finance your home for the renovations and pay off that loan for the next XX number of years (until your house is paid off), or is it better to take out a home improvement loan and pay it off in 5 years, or whatever shorter term you want?

It seems smarter to pay off the amount as soon as possible istead of paying on it and the interest forever and ever, but certainly there must be a reason schell and emma decided to do it the other way.

Please advise...as I'm trying to learn as much as I can about home owning before I buy my own place.

Thanks, and best of luck with your improvements.

the improvement loan sounds like a better way to me.

Rosa, I like Paul James The Gardener Guy. He gives accurate information, plus doesn't seem to take himself too seriously.
This weekend his show was on gardening tools--good topic. Learned a few things.
I believe him when he says he does all his gardening by himself. His yard looks good--and his doesn't overly use insectides

Res, the other side of the 'don't be in debt' equation is that when you take out a long term loan, after the first few years, you are often paying back with devalued dollars. If you're paying back $1,500 a month, on an income of $5,000 a month when you first take out the loan, in ten years you could be paying that $1,500 a month out of an income of $10,000.

But most of this is like sexual positions, you should go with what makes you comfortable.

Emma, you've been to HGTV so you should be able to find Roger Swain, he has a show there. He was the longest serving host of the VG. I think something like 9 years. I agree with you that the new host, Michael Whelan, just doesn't cut it.

Its been snowing here in Duluth off and on most of the day. Pretty light stuff, but just a bit greasy when it comes to driving in it. I can't enjoy it much 'cause I have been battling the flu for over a month now.

Do you remember the name of the orchid person ? also in the fall get a hold of a van bourgandien (sp) bulb catalog . Get the wholesale catalog . Being out of state they will probably not care if you are a business or not . the wholesale prices are a 1/4 or less of the retail catalog prices . The place has been around years and years . It's in Babylon NY which is a long island town . I used to go there when I was doing landscaping and buy masses of bulbs for jobs I was doing . allan

Hi JulieRenee,
I know Roger does that People Plants and Places show, but it's just not the same. He's also the editor of Horticulture magazine (which I love.) I see his name on agendas for flower shows around the country. I'd love to go and hear him lecture sometime. He's got a lot of plant knowledge up there in his brain

Sparky, No I don't remeber the orchid guy's name. I just loooked up the VG show guide but it didn't list the guests names.

Here's Erica's website:

She's gorgeous--but from her appearance on VG, that picture of her on her homepage has been severely airbrushed and/or is 15 years old.

Thanks for the URL Emmachen! ;) I will be sure to look it up. You probably know about Susan Wittig Albert's weekly email newsletter about herbs and herb lore. I love her mysteries and I love reading about herbs.
