I blocked off a week in May for vacation. I thought about going to Barbados, but then Sanibel Island in Florida is also a possibility. I lived in Florida for five years back in the 80's but never made it to Sanibel. I thought we could also take a guide trip through the Everglades and a day trip to Key West.

Barbados looks cool too--but it's an awfully long way away. Plus next year--our tenth anniversary, we're planning to go on a cruise. My first cruise, and BP's first cruise--so we could do Barbados then.

BP said that I could choose where we go. Because this winter has been so fucking fierce, a beautiful white sandy beach sounds so wonderful.

Any of you been to Sanibel/Captiva?

i have not been to sanibel, but i have been on a cruise and it was wonderful.
i also took off some time the first week of may to celebrate our 30th. no plans yet. at this point, i wouldn't care where it was as long as i was far enough away from work that no one could find me.

Never even heard of it. I would wait until your cruise. Try not to get on a cruise that island hops too much, it won't leave you much time to truly enjoy each island before having to run back to the ship. I love cruises. And I especially love the Bermuda cruise, the ship stays docked in Bermuda and is nothing more than a floating hotel for you, leaving you plenty of time to truly enjoy Bermuda.

i want to cruise to alaska but every time i get close to going something happens to postpone it. my guy and i have a joke that we'll get to go as a retirement gift in a little over 20 years from now. i hope i don't have to wait that long. the other trip i want to go on is to the bay of funday and up to prince edward isalnd in canada. i took a geology class in college where we looked at pictures and rock formations in those places and it was so beautiful.

I heard the Alaska cruise is really nice. I am more of a sun / beach person though. -blu

When we came to the states, we went on a mini cruise between Fort Lauderdale and the Bahamas, and that was jolly nice.

My first wife and I honeymooned on Captiva. We stayed in a small and inexpensive bungalo with extensive mangrove swamps just outside the door and the white, sandy Gulf beach within walking distance and earshot. Daytimes, our good friend Spider Andreson, now dead, took us fishing for cobia and red snapper and sometimes to remote islands where we lunched and looked for conch shells. At night, my first good wife punted us around the swamp in a wood canoe while I casted for snook beneath the mangrove trees, the strong fish taking out line and almsot always breaking off under the roots. We never did, not even once, go out to dinner or to a fancy club. Though we could often hear the music and dancing from across the water. Mornings, we slept in, then chatted and bantered about the slightest, silliest of things. That was almost thirty years ago now--we are still married--when we were very young and very snappy.
