i am gonna guess that some bird of prey nabbed it, was going to have a bit of water with the meal and got scared off.
...and my question is...Why have I got to see a dead bird over breakfast?
raccoon perhaps going to wash his hands with his prey.. they are bird nappers
Ditto what Clank said! Sorry you had to see it too, Emma. A raccoon sounds likely if you have those in your neighborhood. I think a just-hatched bird like that is called an "egglet" because it's still shaped like the egg. I'm not sure if that's a proper or informal term.
A predator would have gulped down the small prize despite almost any circumstance. It's more likely one of the parent birds deposited its still-born chick, like an egg shell, somewhere outside the nesting area.
