Old meds

The buzz is that now pharmaceuticals are ending up in our drinking water. People get rid of their old and half-used perscriptions by flushing them down toilets--they end up in wastewater treatments and come back through our faucets. Blech. My community has a program where you can take old 'scripts and even expired over-the-counter meds and aspirin, etc. and they will dispose of them in an envirnomental safe way. They have specialized containers and empty them under police and medical supervision.
Find out if you can do it in your own community.

disgustingly, from what i read, it is just not the flushing of the old meds, it is the meds being passed through peoples systems and coming out in the urine, which then ends up in the water and the sewage treatment plant. the treatment does not remove the traces of drugs. blech.

Does anyone really drink tap water anymore?

And does anyone know if you drink filtered water through your fridge, if that removes the meds?

Or boiling it?

Just curious.

Boots in the UK get rid of your drugs. Why would you flush them down the toilet? Why do people flush dead goldfish down the toilet? Toilets are not bins.

boiling water would only kill bacteria and / or fungi in the water. But seriously , the levels of drugs in the water is miniscule and this is just another foolish thing to scare people about . It will go away in a few days and Blu if you drink only bottled water you may very well be drinking tap water.. Some bottled waters are nothing more then bottled tap water . Your tap water is fine by the way , Long Island has the finest water in the country as does NYC . Drink your tap water . There is nothing at all wrong with it . allan

Allan, I guess when I think tap water, I think out of the faucette - and to me, coming from an apartment where it ran yellow, I will never drink that water. More to do with the old corroded pipes there, than the water itself, but still it grosses me out. Even my animals get filtered water. -blu

I have flushed away a few times. It was a suggestion from a news segment instructing us on how to get rid of old unused scripts. I haven't flushed in a long time.

Hospice nurses, when a patient dies, dump all the meds down the kitchen sink. And there are lots of old people on hospice. So I blame old people.
