It's hotter than hell. 84 degrees and a heat index of 96. Heavy humidity. And what was I doing? Planting Shasta daisies. My daisies burned out last year, and they're such happy flowers I wanted to plant some more. Plus every garden should have some white flowers.
Here is a picture of the soil I was amending for said daisies.
The red poppy is my pride and joy. I have never have luck with poppies but I love them.
The poppy head that looks like a hairy ballsac (maybe Basil's?) is destined to be an orange poppy. I think it's called Prince William.
The picture of that pink flower is a Mystery Flower. I remember planting some bulbs last fall among the purple coneflowers that are taking over part of the garden, but I can't remember the name of them. I almost never plant the name stake alongside the plant or bulb because I invariably say, "I'll remember what that is!" Yeah, right.

Try flashing while it's 84 degrees out.Then it'll seem like 196.It was 95 here ,but seemed like 195.My AC helped some.Had to add a fan to the mix.Had a warm winter tho.I didn't need the heater much.;)
that pooppy is gorgeous I love poppies too,I think it in summer when they grow in the cornfields ,although they do tend to make me think of Flanders Fields
We've been doing yardwork this weekend and I chose some poppies (yellow and orange) and columbines to go under this odd bed beneath two aspen trees. I hope they live. Poppies make me think of the mountains and my great-grandmother, who always had them in her yard. The hummingbirds would flit around.
Aren't shasta daisies a type of mum and aren't they perenials? It's been a long time since I've messed with perenials but i seem to remember this . Allan

Poppies remind me of my grandma--but only because they were the one flower that would not grow for her and she was pissed about that :)

They ARE perennials, but perennials don't live forever--as some people think. A plant can be called perennial and live for three years or beyond. I don't know why my other daisies died....maybe they caught in my Round Up fury.
iks it poppies that like you to move the soil about each year which is why they grow so well in cornfields amd battlefields. they don;t reflower when the soils just left
I suppose three years would make it a perrenial but I always think of perenials as coming up for years and years . I still have stuff that comes up all over this property that I planted years ago even tho I've allowed the tended gardens to go wild .
Mum, I've always encouraged the local gangs to have their rumbles in my back yard so the earth gets moved around and encourages poppy growth . The blood thats lost also is a great fertilizer .

Re gardening; my mother loved to garden, and loved to have other people garden with her. The fact that I hated it with a passion didn't matter to her. I once suggested to her that we just lay concrete over the front yard and paint it green with a few yellow dandelions here and there; she didn't appreciate my suggestion. My revenge is that now the sum total of outside stuff that I do is to say, "Isn't it time for one of you guys to mow the lawn again?"
