The lawn

Yesterday was the first lawn mowing of the season. It’s been LP’s job for the last two years. Instead of boring old, neat, straight-line mowing, my inventive son mows in circles, on angles, leaves big clumps here and there, and doesn’t do a very good job at trimming where the mower won’t go. But at least it’s mown. There are other things to worry about.

I generally hate lawns unless they are great expanses on huge estates which by the way is where the concept of the lawn comes from. The english manor house had a great lawn . The common people used what land they had for vegtables . How the lawn became a must in suburbia is beyond me but I cringe at the chemical trucks around here dumping lovely chemicals onto the lawns of people who have been somehow brainwashed to think thats what they should have . One of the prettiest "lawns" I ever saw was a house on the main road into east hampton that had turned it's entire front yard into a giant perrenial bed . I guess a 1/4 acre of perrenials with a brick path right thru the middle of all the flowers up to the front door . If you must have a lawn the best type is what just grows naturally . Because of its diversity it tends to be bug and disease free without the use of chemicals . The worse thing I see in the summer is little kids and dogs playing on freshly sprayed lawns. I guess people don't realize the danger of these chemicals . Allan

I used to date a guy who had a house on 2 acres and he had one of those riding mowers. I used to love mowing his lawn with that thing.

i am the only one in my neighborhood who doesn't spray chemicals all over my lawn. it might not be as green as everyone else and i have to go and stab and pick my dandelions, but i am still happy with it.

Lawns became popular in suburbia as away to appear upper class like those English manor houses.

Inigo Jones and Lancelot "Capability" Brown have a lot to answer for.
